The last eleven of those years have been in the San Francisco Bay area at Oakland School for the Arts, teaching and leading large jazz ensembles, orchestra, small groups and music theory classes for grades 6-12. For young beginners, I usually start with basic theory notions taken from the Lizard Academy books, combined with some exercises on the guitar. Once comfortable, I start to introduce some notions about improvisation and soloing, as well as increase the difficulty of the exercises I want them to practice on. I've worked with kids ranging from 6 months to 17, and also have worked with adults, and people with disabilities. I continued to teach, and work with kids for several years following.
