For beginning students on guitar i typically start wih Hal Leonards book 1. With about 50 pages in this book, we can go thru at a steady pace and be playing songs from the beginning. Makeing music from the very beginning is the key ! Even the simple one line practice exercizes i back up with a harmonic chordal accompaniment for a satisfying duet. For beginner students, it’s often a little difficult to be able to maneuver around the bass or guitar when you haven’t first held one before. So, it can be a bit tricky in the beginning to get your hands working the right way, and pacing yourself through the adaptation of your hand to the neck of either instrument is essential. I started teaching guitar 21 years ago when a friend of mine asked for some pointers. After working with him for a couple months, it became apparent to me that I was really enjoying sharing the techniques and tricks to more comfortable, relaxed playing. I then pursued a career in teaching music as well as several other disciplines (First Aid/CPR/AED and snowsports). It is important to understand what motivates a student to learn something. Understanding what is creating that relationship between the student and that instrument is important to understand. I encourage learning how to set goals and plot them against a calendar. Identifying short and long term goals helps us have a target to aim for even if it is years away.
