For beginning guitar students, I start with Alfred's Basic Guitar Method. Once a foundation is established, I gauge where the student wants to go stylistically and tailor lesson plans from there. There are a plethora of guitar methods available, but I find it most valuable to learn parts from recordings of the guitarists whom they most want to emulate. For beginning students that are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements or any other book that has the basic principles of music in them. Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. I belive music is the universal language. It doesnt matter what type of music you play, the theory is all the same. When you learn a song, the theory should be learned as well. I like to give scales and a practical theory lesson each week, then transcribe a song for the student to learn that relates to the weeks lesson.
