Most of my teaching experience so far has been in the concert/marching band, teaching middle school band and high school and university marching percussion ensembles, which I have been doing for the last eight years. I have also taught individual percussion lessons to high school and college students off and on throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers. I have taught drum set lessons for five years so far. My performance experience includes seven years of marching band, eleven years of concert band/wind ensemble, two years of orchestra, five years of drumming for the worship team, three years drumming with Depot Street, and one year drumming with Crimson Sunset. I first find out a little bit about my students musical likes and taste, or, with younger students, find somethingfun that interests them, just to find some common ground. I also find out a students long term goals. For instance, if a student seeks to be a opera singer as opposed to a worship leader, the training needs to be more pointed towards classical pieces and Arias instead of learning church music and how to engage a crowd. I often teach by using a book of my choice as a lesson guide.I generally start every lesson by practicing finger exercises by running up and down the neck and also practice alternating the fingers with the picking hand.This is proper technique that will develop great speed and also great tone.After the exercises we go through the lessons outlined in the book.At the end of each lesson,I give my students, assignments to practice in their spare time ,which are based on the exercises from book.They are usually things that we have gone through during the lessons.I encourage my students to call or text me if it's something that they don't understand.I am more than happy to be of assistance. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
