For beginner students, it’s often a little difficult to be able to maneuver around the bass or guitar when you haven’t first held one before. So, it can be a bit tricky in the beginning to get your hands working the right way, and pacing yourself through the adaptation of your hand to the neck of either instrument is essential. So, lots of finger exercises are done and getting the fingers working by playing melodies to familiar tunes is helpful as well. Read More

For beginning students, my methods are centered around melody in the form of easy to play songs and tunes, and developing an understanding for basic theory through rudimentary scales and chord construction. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar For Kids. For teenage and adult students I use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition. For classical guitar students I use Aaron Shearer's Learning the Classic Guitar Volume 2. After a student has a grasp over basic technique, chords, and reading I like to split the lesson between book work (note reading) and teaching students to play songs that they enjoy. Read More
