My approach varies depending on the student's skill level and chosen instrument, but for beginners I always try to get them familiarized with their instrument: teaching them the basics of reading music and how to navigate the different keys (or strings, etc.). From there I start teaching various musical concepts, the rudiments of music theory, and begin introducing them to different styles of music. I also adapt my teaching to each individual, allowing the student to make an emotional connection to what they are learning and to apply that emotionality back into their playing. My teaching style is very analytical yet engaging! I try to establish a good relationship before pushing a student. At that point I will ask the student to play to the best of his/her ability. I teach in a style that helps children isolate problem areas, so that they can practice specific excerpts they are struggling with. I originally enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown to earn a degree in Elementary Education. After my second year, I left to persue other endeavors. In 2010, I began taking on guitar students in Windber, PA teaching beginner and intermediate guitar lessons to several high school students. I have done group sessions which usually turn into jam sessions focusing on each students individual strength while showing them how to play with others, but I also enjoy individual sessions that go more in depth with structure, form, rythm, and some music theory involved.
