In general, I aim to incorporate age/skill appropriate elements of formal note reading, songs of interest, and improvisation into each lesson. I have found that this combination can go a long way in helping students enjoy the overall experience, and motivate them to practice so they will continue to learn/build their skills and enjoyment. Once upon a time, one of my co-workers asked me to show her how to play some songs on the guitar.
