As someone who's played cello for the past 2 decades, I can say with certainty through my own experience, that the most effective teachers are the ones who adapt to each student. When a teacher uses sort of a "cookie cutter" teaching method and applies the same lessons to each and every student, students often don't get the proper attention they need for for specific aspects of their playing. Beginner Violin/Viola/Cello/Double Bass- I typically start in a class method book like essential elements or something similar, and move out of that book into etude books with music that pairs well with them, before moving onto things that are more student chosen once they can play well enough to play things that they like. Beginner Piano- I use the Leila Fletcher books because they are set up at a good pace, and work through those, adding in music that a student wants to learn as we go. Read More

The combination of these practices keep the lessons student-centered, but also ensure that the learning objectives are accomplished. I approach teaching very seriously with a lot of planning, but during the lesson, I have lots of fun getting to talk to my students! During lessons, I strive to get to know my student better to build a positive relationship so that both of us truly enjoy our time together. I began coaching younger string students before I was even out of high school and taught my first private violin lessons while I was finishing my degree. After college, I played the violin with a Beatles Tribute Band called Number 9 and I also regularly played on violin and viola in the pit orchestra for the Augusta Players, Augusta's premier professional theatre company. I taught for seven years in the Richmond County Public Schools, two as a choral director, and five of which were with the Orchestra Program. Read More

For younger beginners, I like to start with a method book such as Essential Elements to build the foundations of music and the instruments. After students have worked through this, we begin working on solo repertoire to get students excited to perform songs at their first recital! This is also a great time to begin learning about improvisation and creative playing, something that we all already have within us.
