I'm always open to trying different songs and even encourage my students to find songs that they want to play. During the first lesson, I have a short discussion with the student to see what their goals are. I also ask what about music interests them. I then ask them to perform anything of their choice to assess their ability level (if applicable). After that, I tell them what immediately needs to be addressed and how this will work with their longterm goal. I emphasize on scales and etudes which are foundations for cello playing. In addition, I will begin to introduce a solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years.
