I have a "less talk, more play" approach to music. People learn instruments because they want to play music, and that is always the focus in my lessons. While some instructors incessantly talk about theory, history, and other music concepts, I prefer to keep the talking to a minimum and have my students play their instrument as much as possible. For younger beginners, I like to start with a method book such as Essential Elements to build the foundations of music and the instruments. After students have worked through this, we begin working on solo repertoire to get students excited to perform songs at their first recital! This is also a great time to begin learning about improvisation and creative playing, something that we all already have within us. My true passion for music education began when I moved to Houston for graduate school. During my time there, I quickly had grown my studio to upwards of 15 students at local music schools, and would also lead sectionals for group cello lessons at middleschools and highschools nearby. I also work with and teach for a non-profit organization called Musicians for the World, which aims to bring quality virtual music education to vulnerable communities around the world; through this non-profit, I have some students from Kenya, Haiti, Peru, Belize, and Mexico!
