For a vocal student, I will use solfege as a basic tool to advance sight-reading skills as well as functions of each scale degree in its harmonic structure. From there it is easy for me to determine what to begin teaching first. For beginner students, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. If the student has graduated from the beginner book, then I can proceed to intermediate or advanced methods which will include a combination of studies in pedagogy, repertoire, composers, etudes, ensemble work, and technical studies.
