My teaching experience began as an undergraduate student 9 years ago with a private saxophone studio. I have also taught beginning to intermediate piano, clarinet, and oboe lessons. Additionally, I was recently hired as the adjunct professor for woodwind instruction at my local community college. I expect my students to practice regularly as this helps students to solidify skills and techniques taught during lessons. I tend to work with students on a one-on-one basis. I start by showing the student how to get a sound out of their instrument, and then I lead a student through their first scales. I almost always play the piece or scale first, as I have found learning to read music is far easier to learn when the student already has an idea how the music should sound before they try to play the piece. It's quite difficult and unproductive to try and fit every student into the same method. Younger students, beginning and intermediate, progress often has to follow a school dictated path. Although my collegiate educational background is not primarily in music, I have vast knowledge of music theory, and understand that each student has individual needs. My biggest method that has the most success, no matter the subject of training is "I Do, We Do, You Do". When teaching a new musical concept, it is most important for a student to have an understanding of the principle. I would explain the concept, and give an example by demonstrating the concept (I Do), however many times the student needs me to do so, and they would practice the concept with me (We Do), and once they feel comfortable trying the concept on their own, I would have them demonstrate the concept for me until mastery is achieved (You Do).
