Instruments: Clarinet

I remember when I was in the 5th grade I was asked which instrument I would like to play. Since my best friend decided to play clarinet, I thought I would give it a shot. Little did I know that this was the first step in a whole musical journey including playing in orchestras, writing music, and forming my own Music Series! I'd like to work with students in a balance of what they feel is most important combined with proper fundamental technique. Read More

For beginner students with little to no playing experience, I usually start with the Essential Elements series, along with supplemental music theory instruction. I usually switch the student over to the Rubank books once they've grasped the fundamentals. I then introduce standard solo repertoire as well as etudes, orchestral excerpts, etc. I encourage ensemble playing and deep music listening to all my students as well. For piano students, I am comfortable teaching Suzuki, Faber & Faber, and many other methods. Working with students has allowed me to develop methods and philosophies that will allow students to grow as musicians. Read More

You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More
