My approaches change depending on a students age, experience, and personality. Every student is unique and has their own musical language to develop and it is my philosophy that unique students require unique approaches. All of that being said, I utilize lesson time as efficiently as possible to give students the tools they need to progress in their own solo practice. One of my teachers once said "I am only your teacher for an hour each week, that means for 167 hours a week you are your own teacher." This adage shaped my approach to lessons so that I can give students the ability to practice as effectively as possible. Read More

I am a recent graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I received my Masters of Music in Trumpet Performance with Eric Berlin. In my time there, I was a member of the Graduate Brass Quintet, Faculty Brass Quintet, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Trumpet Ensemble. I also had the opportunity to perform on two concerts with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra in Symphony Hall. I did my undergraduate work at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where I received two Bachelors of Music, in Trumpet performance and Music Education. Read More

I've been in the teaching field for the past couple years through small groups and ensembles, as well as one on one private lessons. I've helped both band and choir directors with their ensembles and selected students, mostly marching band camps and OMEA Solo and Ensemble participants. Below I'll list a couple of experiences I had from Marion Harding's middle and high school summer camps: A couple weeks before school begins, the Harding Music Department requires students interested in participating in the middle school band to attend a weeklong music camp where they learn how to start making a sound on their selected instrument. I find teaching very rewarding. The benefits of studying music are now well documented. It is amazing to see my younger students begin to excel in other areas of studies. It is also very rewarding to act as a coach with my older learners as they begin or re-aquaint themselves to their love of music. I have been able to bring students of all ages and levels of music and learning ability forward. Read More

My philosophy of teaching is that there is a base of knowledge and skills that a student must possess before a more personal journey in music can occur. While I don't subscribe to any particular method I do believe there is a best order to learning. After about a year of instruction I try to encourage students to explore music more on their own, and eventually get to the point where my job is more of a coach than a teacher. Read More
