I have a set methodology that is flexible enough to cater to each individual student. We learn exercises for basic technique, followed by scales and arpeggios, then we work from a method book to address technique issues specific to clarinet. After that, we work on music such as etudes, solos, and ensemble parts for band or orchestra. For my younger students I usually start with major and minor scales tied in with simple to challenging etudes. I do not have a specific book that I work out of, though if the student has one that they work out of I would be happy to accommodate. I started working as a professional tutor in 2009, teaching subjects from music to chess and economics. My transition from general tutor to full-time music teacher happened in 2014, and every day I'm reminded how wonderful that decision was. I believe success in music comes from passion, performance, and consistency. My method focuses on beginning slowly, mastering a piece of music before building speed and expression. At Michigan State University, I taught undergraduate studio masterclasses and coached undergraduate chamber ensembles. I also worked for three years at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where I taught private lessons, conducted clarinet and woodwind sectionals, and taught the Music Theory minor course (in addition to several non-music courses). At Iowa State University, I tutored for Introduction to Music Listening (as well as several non-music courses). Additionally, I have experience working with children with special needs, as I worked as a Summer School Special Education Para-Educator for Cedar Falls Public Schools in Iowa. Read More

I also enjoy seeing their love of music develop.  I take each student where they are: beginner or advanced, and put goals in place for them.  Such goals can be things like learning music for solo and ensemble band / orchestra competitions, performing in their Church, or putting together a jazz band or classical ensemble for concerts.
