My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. I am motivated to teach students all aspects of music. Each lesson focuses on scales and exercises, performance pieces, and musical creation. I graduated from St. Mary's college in 2006 with a BA of performing arts. I am currently playing with the Walnut Creek Concert Band and The Community Womens Orchestra. I started teaching saxophone at the age of 14 as a volunteer in the Songcatchers program in New Rochelle, a service that provided free private lessons to children who couldn't afford them. For both Clarinet and Saxophone I like to start in the Rubank Elementary method. As the student progresses, I often will add two books, Learn to Play Duets and also Fun for the Clarinet/Saxophone. The last one are two separate books, but one for each instrument. I usually prescribe adults the same books to start. I move on to Rubank Intermediate, and then move to Hite, Melodious and Progressive Etudes. Read More
