The methods that I use will be outlined to you before the first lesson. Beginning students learn rudiments and work into repertoire of their own interest as time moves along. Intermediate students and beyond learn should indicate any interests they have musically to have a supplement to lesson materials. I encourage my students to participate in Music Teacher National Association competitions, festivals, and other events when appropriate. Our former students have gone onto win the Governors Award for Musical Theatre Performance, Tisch School for Performing Arts, and Westminster Choir College. While at Harrison High School & Washington Middle school, I implemented an after-school academy for the performing arts, which includes: a dance program, jazz vocals, musical theatre lab, and a Finale writing program which our students use state of the art equipment to write and record their own material. That's why I always create new, customized lesson plans and provide individualized materials for all of my students. In my experience, this approach is most effective at increasing the student's musical ability—and it's a lot more fun! Rather than just going cover to cover through a method book, we'll keep things interesting and fresh by playing music games (especially with younger students), composing our own music, listening to new artists, and working on pieces that are requested by the student.
