Since I have such limited teaching experience, it is impossible to define my teaching style. I do love the instrument. It enabled me to get into the Air Force Band and legally avoid serving in combat during wartime. It has also been a source of pleasure for decades. First and foremost, learning any musical instrument should be a fun experience. With this in mind, each person's lesson is subjective and progresses according to the student's learning style; a beginning 5 yr old student's lesson will look much different that a beginning 14 yr old student's lesson. Each student will learn repertoire from a lesson book, solo repertoire and anything else that they may express interest in. For students who are learning an instrument for band or marching band, I like to integrate their sheet music or method books into the lesson. I use method books with students who are new to their instrument. These materials are then supplemented with scales, solo repertoire, exercises, and technique work as appropriate for each student's interest and skill level. Lessons also consist of listening to previous assignments/repertoire from prior weeks and then offering feedback, answering any questions a student may have, and giving new assignments for the next lesson. For my students, I like to make sure that their experience learning music is fun and enjoyable, but also rewarding. I want to make sure that anyone studying with me is having a fun time, but also learning good habits. It is very important to learn how to warm up properly and also how to correctly play your instrument. My teaching experience dates to the beginning of my undergraduate degree. I took one year of music education experience courses and gained valuable experience observing and student teaching in public schools. I have also maintained a small private studio for the past seven years. It is extremely important to me that my students have fun making music and learning to play their instrument.
