My teaching method is quite flexible depending on the abilities and skill sets of each student. For a vocal student, I will use solfege as a basic tool to advance sight-reading skills as well as functions of each scale degree in its harmonic structure. I believe that the ability to read music as a vocalist is crucial for further advancement as a musician. I tailor lessons for each individual student based upon their age, ability, and cognition. I am a big believer in repetition, and reinforce fundamentals heavily. For all students, we will work greatly on building good habits right away. We will do exercises for breathing, embouchure, and hand position. From there, we will work on tone quality. As we begin learning notes and rhythms, we will use method books such as Essential Elements, in addition to easy songs for beginners to get comfortable practicing and eventually performing. I was also an instructor at the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp, a counselor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Music Mentor of the Resident College of Arts in Humanities at MSU. I served as a woodwind specialist for marching bands for several years. I previously taught classes on music technology and composition at MSU and assisted in Early Childhood music classes at CMS.
