I've performed in multiple stages in North America with both established and indie artists. Music in the school system is taught backwards. If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration. For me nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student smile while they are playing their instrument. Therefore it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I do this by setting goals for the current lesson as well as goals for their next lesson. I believe that acknowledging the students accomplishments only makes the students want to progress further on their instrument.
