The primary responsibility of a music teacher is to cultivate music literacy; an understanding of music from both a fundamental and holistic standpoint. Fundamentals would include: technique, sight-reading, rhythms, scales, arpeggios, rudiments, chords, etc. Holistic concepts would include: music history, music theory, ear training, ethnomusicology, etc. My ultimate goal for all of my students is to help them become independent and enthusiastic musicians. After college I continued to gig professionally, tour, and record and kept up a private studio where I taught upright bass, electric bass and guitar. I kept working and added voice, piano, drums and ukulele to the roster of instruments that I could teach after working for BandWorks- a school of rock- and at the Bird School of Music. I've played a diverse range of music from Afro-beat, Latin, Latin Jazz, RB and Soul to Rock, Funk, Hip-Hop, Pop, Avant-garde, Jam, Americana, and Bluegrass and it has helped me to see the fundamental similarities that exist in all styles. Growing up with a music teacher for a mom, I began playing piano, learning music theory, and sight-reading at age 5. After years of studying piano, I expanded my musical journey by picking up the trombone, bass, guitar, and drums by the age of 12. I am a passionate instructor who loves to watch students grow and develop.
