The one thing I want out of my lessons is for the student to become passionate about the drums/music. I believe in the student taking their own pace as they progress through their lessons. I would like for my students to always be reaching for a goal, and having a plan on how they are going to achieve it. I want this to be challenging but fun. I want my students to look forward to having their drum lesson and then practicing later on! Read More

For beginning percussion students who are children, I typically start with Kennan Wylie's Simple Steps to Successful Beginning Percussion and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I like to engage with my students on a personal level in addition to a student/teacher perspective. I've found that when my students are excited to see me each week, they are more willing to follow my instruction and try their best when it comes to practicing. An important aspect of this philosophy is giving the student a chance to choose their own music. Initially, they begin learning things at my instruction and through my own curriculum or the curriculum of the Bastien or Hal Leonard books, but I also let them choose one of their favorite songs for us to work on together. If a student comes to me as a clean slate, we will explore different styles of music until we find that spark. Read More

Many of my students were children at the time and have grown to be stellar performers. Read More
