Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. For beginning students typically start with Drum Set For Kids by Hal Leonard. In this book after playing lessons each one has a song to play along to with a recording. This makes learning this book fun for studemts. I also like to focus on hand technique and all of the basics for playing Drums.
