I have found encouragement and celebrating even the smallest of accomplishments is far more effective than a heavy handed approach ala whiplash. For children I start with the very basics of rythym adn technique. If you learn these at a young age these things will stay forever. I encorporate fun easy songs to play along to. As the child progresses more advanced skills will be given. For college age to adults I focus on what the person is interested and how far they want to take it. For beginners who are children, I help them learn to identify what all the parts of the instrument are, and what they do. For example, I taught my 2-year-old niece how to play the ukulele by helping her learn how to play the string. After she became comfortable with playing the string, I then proceeded to teach her how to push down behind the shiny stick, the "fret."
