I first started teaching drums part-time over ten years ago. My students have ranged in age from 12 to 45; my students tend to be at a Novice level, though I have also taught intermediates. I teach in my own home studio or at the student's house. Working on the drum pad as well as the drumset provides the student with multiple forums of expression and learning of multiple skills. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. The one book I use for my students is Ted Reed's "Progressive Steps to Syncopation For The Modern Drummer". I use this book for my own benefit on a daily basis. Its interpretation and application is limited only by the student's or instructor's imagination. This book is such a great resource for assisting the student in learning basic reading skills. Once the student becomes familiar with recognizing certain rhythmic sequences, It enables them to study and learn from other publications with an increased level of facility. Read More
