For beginners who are children, I help them learn to identify what all the parts of the instrument are, and what they do. For example, I taught my 2-year-old niece how to play the ukulele by helping her learn how to play the string. After she became comfortable with playing the string, I then proceeded to teach her how to push down behind the shiny stick, the "fret." My methods vary on the student and subject. Beginning students will typically focus more on technical pieces of music to improve on certain aspects of a few pieces to perform. More advanced students will still practice technical parts of their music, but less time will be spent on it during a lesson. Advanced level students will spend more time on repertoire and performance. I also spend a lot of time developing proper technique with my students, to ensure that my students do not form bad habits that limit their improvement. Trained in a competitive drumline environment, I have an eagle eye for ways to rapidly improve students' techniques and rudimental abilities.
