I will ask the student for their goals and what they wish to accomplish by taking lessons. Once we establish a goal we can work on attaining that goal. During lessons I find it useful for students to learn some basic music theory as it helps understanding patterns that can be applied to the clarinet. However, I always like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, and I like to take exercises from my own collection that I've accumulated over the years, and determine which exercise is needed based on which aspects of playing a student might need working on. I began teaching the flute while at the University of Kentucky as an assistant to my professor Gordon Cole in his flute methods class to music educators. Since then, I have been teaching private lessons to middle and high school students. I do welcome beginners as well as adult students. I believe that teaching students how to practice is essential to their success.
