While I do not have much experience teaching music, I've been playing for over a decade, participating in both concert and marching ensembles, as well as Murray State's flute ensemble for several years. I also have plenty of experience working with children, both in my time working in daycares, primarily with ages 6 months through age 5, as well as volunteering helping with the children's choir at the church I grew up in and have attended my entire life. I am a big fan of the Rubank elementary, intermediate, and advance methods. In addition I like incorporate sight reading into lessons due to being a common element in auditions. For high school students the I use Rubank books and supplement that with Rose etudes as they are often use as audition material in KY. I also like to introduce pieces and exercises that appeal across all different genres in an effort to teach a holistic approach to music and the reach that the flute/piccolo has. Specifically, I like to use the Hal Leonard Rubank Method for Flute and work through those books, as this is the way I learned.  It's also important to incorporate solo pieces into their repertoire, as gaining experience with performance is a crucial element to overall musicianship. I began teaching the flute while at the University of Kentucky as an assistant to my professor Gordon Cole in his flute methods class to music educators. Since then, I have been teaching private lessons to middle and high school students. I do welcome beginners as well as adult students. I believe that teaching students how to practice is essential to their success.
