I have been in love with the flute for over 20 years. I studied flute performance at the University of Kentucky under Gordon Cole. I have taught numerous school age children but welcome adult students as well. I have done free lance work with the Lexington Ballet Theatre Orchestra as well as other professional gigs. My teaching experience actually began in a limited capacity prior to starting college. I was fortunate to receive private flute instruction throughout high school, and as a result, I held roles as a section leader as a high school upperclassman.  Upon my college graduation, I entered the workforce, all the while picking up flute students, primarily at a beginner level.  I greatly enjoyed building a firm foundation with each student given their ability, so we had a solid starting point to build upon. I typically have unique lesson plans and approaches for each student once technique and basics have been learned, as everyone tends to learn differently from everyone else. However, I always like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, and I like to take exercises from my own collection that I've accumulated over the years, and determine which exercise is needed based on which aspects of playing a student might need working on. I will ask the student for their goals and what they wish to accomplish by taking lessons. Once we establish a goal we can work on attaining that goal. During lessons I find it useful for students to learn some basic music theory as it helps understanding patterns that can be applied to the clarinet. I strongly focus on fundamentals especially when teaching younger players. My style of teaching is to prepare students for auditions and solo and ensemble festival. Read More
