Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. Lessons will feature a warm-up period, followed by review of material from previous lessons, playing of new material, and wrap-up with sightreading and assignments for next lesson. Students are often encouraged to self-evaluate and set their own level of rigor. I believe in a collaborative approach that involves questioning students and having students ask questions of themselves. I have lead others and taught them before ever having my own classroom as a leader in High School and College. It has greatly pleased me that my students have had many accomplishments in many groups. These vary from various Honors Bands, the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra, and many High Valued Scholarships. I began teaching privately in 2012. I have worked with students from the very beginning who had no flute experience to very advanced students. I love teaching a diverse range of ages and abilities because I feel that we all have something very special that we bring to music. I have taught privately in one-on-one settings and also with many students at once in band classrooms.
