I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. Additionally it is important to have both small goals to achieve each week and large goals to achieve over a number of months, so my students can be aware and proud of their progress over time. I like to challenge my students when I feel they should be. I also try very hard to showcase them whenever possible to show the community the great talent that is amongst us. I would have to say my main approach to teaching is figuring out what works best for each individual student, seeing as though everyone learns differently and at different paces. Forcing a student to learn something when they don't want to is something I do not allow, I can only encourage but not force. Read More

I have used many methods books for piano and flute. When I started teaching lessons, I lived in a military town. I still have this philosophy unless a student is unhappy with their current method. When I start a beginning student, I like to use Alfred's Premier Course. Read More

My teaching experience began about 2 years ago as I started teaching private lessons part time. I started out with beginning piano lessons in my home studio. For the past 9-10 months I have built up my studio more and increased my number of piano students. I encourage regular practice and include incentives for extra practice. While I do focus on the playing the instrument first and focusing on the subject at hand, I do switch up the activities. Read More

As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music. If my students do not leave every lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and wanting to practice and play music, then I am not doing my job. Just as I tailor each lesson to match the individual student, expect the student to grow and develop as a musician at his/her own pace. Ultimately, music is universally accessible and I want to foster a love and appreciation for listening to music as well as performing music. Read More
