Instruments: Voice, Saxophone, Flute, Piccolo, Bassoon, Music

I believe that everything begins with fundamentals. That being said, it's most important to learn what the students goal is. Perhaps they only want to learn a particular piece that they are playing for Solo and Ensemble Contest. Perhaps it's an adult student that just wants to learn to play a particular piece for a special occasion. Lessons have to be tailored to to meet the individual students desires. For the students that really want to learn their instrument, I would begin with a methods book with an emphasis on scales and studies. Read More

Additionally, I like to work with scales and long tones in a more advanced way, expanding the range of the instrument and tone quality as we prepare repertoire. With students interested in jazz, either as their primary course of study or in addition to classical music, we focus even more on scales and arpeggios, aiming to master first the most commonly used keys and then expanding to 12 key mastery. I like to begin with a play-along book like Jamey Aebersold's "Maiden Voyage", stressing the beginnings of improvisation, then moving on to more advanced tunes and chord progressions. Read More

There are many terrific methods and books available for musical development. An easy and enjoyable starter is Essential Elements. The Eubanks series is good, especially the advanced flute book one. There are some great solo books especially the Kris books 1-3 that come with nice piano accompaniments. Students really benefit from scale technique development coupled with arpeggio and varied articulation studies like Klose for Clarinet and Melodiusvand Progressive Studies for Saxophone. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with simple traditional songs that they know. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For advanced beginners to intermediate-level students, I try to find out what interests the student may have, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun—no matter their ability level. Instruments: Flute, Recorder, Piccolo

My greatest interest in music rests in Ethnomusicology. I have a particular passion for traditional Celtic music, and am proficient in the Tin Whistles. I also dabble in traditional Native American flutes, and own instruments from Guatamaula and the indigenous tribes of Alaska. With my teaching comes a deep appreciation for music, the message it sends, and the way that music culture affects the people around us. I continue to expand my knowledge of cultural musics, and would love the opportunity to pass that knowledge on to my students. Read More
