As an advocate for fine arts education, I come with an understanding of the tremendous value that music brings to the lives of all people. I personally believe that music education should be accessible to anyone no matter what background and I strive to make every student feel welcome in my studio. My experience lies in teaching comprehensive music lessons, particularly in the flute, to all ages and levels. From beginning fundamentals to more advanced repertoire, I possess a keen ability to mentor students, encouraging them to live into their musical goals and aspirations while cultivating an environment that is enjoyable and engaging. I strive to get all of my students to understand not just how to play music, but how to learn how to play music-similar to the old adage "give a man a fish and he can eat today, but teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for the rest of his life". I use a open school-style philosophy of teaching, which revolves around exploration of the music (trial and error, in a sense), as well as encouraging the students to be self-reflective, self-critical, and to ask as many questions as they want to in order to understand each musical concept within the confines of his/her individual learning style. I am also a big fan of using duets to build listening skills and fluidity (and most students think duets are fun!). For piano lessons, I have experience with a variety of methods; each has its strengths and weaknesses. If a student is already using a particular method, we can continue with that if it seems to be working well. Read More
