For beginning students I start with the Essential elements similar to what they learn in a middle school classroom. I have a student use a sprial or paper and pencil to keep track of their progress week to week as well as a mental reminder to refer to when they practice. I always recommend having a pencil and highlighter color of choice during lessons to be able to mark or make notes on music and highlighter as a memory jogger as needed. Read More

I set realistic goals for each student, and I encourage each student to practice to meet their goals each week. I also make myself available to all students at anytime for questions during their practice. I have a system of teaching jazz improvisation that ensures that every student can play and read changes. In high school I had the great privilege of being selected as the Principal clarinetist in the Minnesota All-State Band. We performed at the summer camp designed for these groups and recreated our performance at Orchestra Hall, home of the Minnesota Orchestra, the following spring. Clarinet is my primary instrument and first love. I also teach saxophone and beginning flute and hope to add other woodwinds in the future. I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for.
