I like to tailor my lessons and teaching methods to the skills and age of the player. I usually will put together a bundle exercises compile of flute methods and exercises I create myself to help the student progress. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I grew up in home where all forms of music, especially classical, were appreciated. When I was young, I started out as a violinist and quickly fell in love with performing in an orchestra. I continued my music education by adding flute and French horn to repertoire. Over the years, I picked up numerous other instruments. For beginning students (adult and children) I like to be sure that their knowledge about fundamentals is solid. I believe ear training is paramount. Not everyone can sing, but secure pitch discrimination can help all musicians (even percussionists). I encourage all students to participate in ensembles (band, choral also). Knowledge of phrasing is also important to aspiring musicians. Students need support from listening to others play (live performances, radio,and recordings). Read More
