I believe strongly that passion is infectious, and is key to my teaching. I ask all of my student to set realistic goals and treat our progress as a journey in which we will gradually pick up the skills to grow with steady work. This comes from enjoying the “artistic process” and can only be discovered when we move together at a pace that is comfortable for the student. I have been teaching music lessons in schools and privately since 1994. I currently teach elementary general music and 4th/5th grade band lessons in a Brooklyn public school-the New York City Department of Education. Before 2012, I was a travelling teacher employed by Paul Effman Music Service to serve Catholic Schools in the Diocese Of Brooklyn. --My goal as a music teacher has always been to encourage children to love music from childhood to the latest years of their lives. After graduating from college, I began teaching privately in my home state of Texas at the middle and high school levels in New Braunfels and Austin. Soon, I began teaching adults as well and when I moved to Washington D.C. in fall of 2006, I became the Music Instructor at The Art and Drama Therapy Institute, a center for adults with developmental disabilities. This experience had a great impact on me in terms of understanding the big picture in that the goals and methods relating to the technical aspects of music lessons, but the grand value that music offers in terms of the emotional and spiritual rewards as well. I am a classically trained flute player and have had the privilege of playing in ensembles across Long Island and here within the SUNY New Paltz community. I spent years working to master techniques of classical flute playing. However, I also have experience playing classical flute in a different genre/atmosphere as seen in the YouTube link below! I began playing piano at a young age and have been fortunate enough to continue learning in both the SUNY New Paltz Music Department, and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick in Ireland.
