Learning a musical instrument should always be a very rewarding and satisfying experience.  Therefore, I have a large variety of techniques in my musical bag of tricks to challenge all types of learners.  During my 10 years as a full time band director, I have developed many musical "games", often based on Suzuki methods, to make learning fundamentals, scales, and repertoire much more enjoyable.  These include practice rewards, Band Olympics, ninja karate belts, and Harry Potter themed games. I tailor each of my lessons to the needs and desires of each individual. I am fond of using method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Bruce Peterson's Standard of Excellence (or, with school children in a band program, whatever their method book may be), but I also like to bring separate handouts or sheets of exercises, drills, and songs that I have created over the years. During my work with this program at the bedside, I saw what live music could do for a person's health in the way of improved blood pressure, improved heart rate and less stress. Then I had training with a Music Therapist who taught group drumming for wellness.
