My formal teaching experience began at East Carolina University in my undergraduate years. I had the opportunity to work as an instructor for the Jazz Track at the ECU Summer Music Camp for four years before I moved on to graduate school at Peabody Conservatory. Additionally I've taught many private lessons in North Carolina and York Pennsylvania. I was also a member of the school's jazz ensembles and began to study improvisation. Between 2008 and 2013 I taught classes and lessons, mostly classical in nature, but also played regularly in jazz ensembles around Washington DC. I honed my improvisation skills through attending Barry Harris' Jazz Workshop in NY and recieving lessons from the great Lee Konitz. I like using flashcards, so students can quickly develop their site-reading. I use different techniques that meet the individual capacity of the students and adults. For intermediate and advanced students I prefer scales, etudes (exercises), sonatas, concertos and solo pieces of their preference. I like to play duets with my students and that is usually their favorite part as we can combine talents to play something beautiful.
