I strive to help my students find joy and confidence in their flute playing. This means treating each student as an individual, recognizing that each student may have different goals and learning styles, and teaching and planning lessons accordingly. I believe strongly in teaching from a place of encouragement and empathy. Lessons are a safe space for students to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. I encourage my students to set short-term and long-term goals for themselves to work toward accomplishing in our lessons. I also pay special attention to the goals and desires of the student's guardians to know what I do to help students reach their full potential. When I was in middle school I developed a strong passion for music performance and teaching. I went to a performing arts high school called The Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach Florida where I excelled in perforance on clarinet and saxophone. Knowing that I wanted to major in music the performing arts high school helped me very much. Hello! I'm 25 year Berklee College of Music Alumnus with 16 years playing experience! I started studying the saxophone at 9 years old and spent most of my early school years performing in community, school, and local college jazz bands around the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington State. My music has given me the opportunity to travel the world, and in summer of 2016, I conducted a tour of Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda with my band the AfroXchange in conjunction with music therapy organization Global Youth Groove where I hosted jazz masterclasses, as well as performed at clubs and festivals, and assisted a music therapy team around the countryside. As mentioned previously, I will encourage students to have a practice journal that tracks many aspects of progress. This, combined with gauging each student's skill level and needs, is the basis of my teaching style. I never use negative incentives with my students, as I believe that does more harm than good.
