For young beginning flute students, I typically work from Rubank's Elementary Method and supplement with my own exercises and additional pieces. After the first year or so, I supplement with technical exercises and the Melodious and Progressive Studies and move on to solos from a number of other books. For violin and viola students, I typically work from the Suzuki books and supplement with scales, shifting exercises, and etudes. It is a great joy to see students learn, grow, and have fun! I begin by asking the student of their goals, and eventually help them develop new goals as they explore and find their unique gifts. Students are provided with a unique, well-rounded program tailored for them, including the foundational resources and understanding needed to fly with other musicians. Each student will find that I am looking into their musical interests and strong points as an outlet to keep the lessons personal and relevant, including compositions written just for them, while continuously stretching them to the next step as they advance to their vision. My instruction experience dates back to my time in high school, as I started instructing private lessons part time 11 years ago, and have been regularly teaching in my home studio throughout that time. Creating a consistent practice schedule is one of the ideas I like to emphasize for younger students, as it will be more likely to benefit student development, and help them grow a passion for the instrument.
