For beginning students, I combine multiple elements to understand the various aspects of their new instruments. With a combination of videos for inspiration, singing for audiation, and moving for connection to the instrument and how our muscles respond to it. My lessons rarely consist of sitting for the entire time. I believe that in the short time we have in lessons, it is more important to expose students to a variety of resources to investigate their new endeavor than it is to repeat repertoire for the sake of a quick result. To start, I like to have students use the Beginner Rubank Method Book (the blue book) and work through this to get the basics down. After this, I like to choose some supplemental solo pieces that aren't in this book to help the students grasp the concepts that they have been working on, outside of what is shown in the book. To me as a musician, teaching is as important and as necessary to our art as performing, and it is always a joy to share that art with students. I graduated from Kent State University in 2015 with my Bachelor of Science in Music Education, followed by a Master of Music in Bassoon Performance in 2019, and recently completed an Artist Diploma from UC-CCM.
