My teaching style is structured primarily on learning to play by ear with light theory instruction.  For advanced and more serious students, I am a huge theory nerd and I really enjoy teaching a more technical approach as well. My philosophy is to improve a student's skills by nurturing each person's specific interest and goals.  I do not find it effective to try and force my own taste in music on my students, although I do make suggestions based on skills a student is trying to acquire. For adults, I always start off with the list of five: five songs and/or artists that inspire them. This gives me an idea of what they want to be learning in the coming months, and I create a path for them that leads that direction, from the very first step. I am glad to say I’ve accomplished many things in the world of music; during my formative years as a guitarist, I took a few high school classes but honed most of my craft in private lessons and during my hours of practice at home. While at UCSB, I again studied privately (apart form completing my undergrad) with Mark Covey, a pupil of Christopher Parkening. Since then, as part of further professional development, I’ve briefly studied classical music with Taso Comanescu, ongoing with Marc Teicholz, and Jazz guitar briefly with John Storie in LA. I put passion and enjoyment of the music above all else. I keep things casual, light and fun in terms of energy, but focused and diligent in terms of practice. I love finding the soul of the song and pulling out the passion of the student so that they are engaged and intrigued by whatever we're doing at all times. I have been teaching for thirty years and find it very rewarding. I like to use classical studies as a core for development and then bring in music of other genres for a diverse background. I also like to use music that the students are interested in.
