I encourage small but daily practice. you don't have to play guitar for 4 hours a day to make good progress. Just 15 minutes every day will be sufficient especially when you first start out. It is deeply satisfying when i see a student grasp a concept that they worked so hard on. set realistic goals and don't try to overwhelm yourself by trying to play extremely difficult music in a short amount of time. basics is key if you know the basics you can do the harder things and with ease. I teach music at extracurricular programs in many elementary and pre schools across the Northern Virginia and Maryland area. I also teach piano and guitar in my home studio in Fairfax. I feel qualified to teach children, age 5-18, and to do so in a way that each child feels happy, special, and encouraged. I have gained many skills over the years and the most valuable skill I gained is how to make students love the instrument they play! Read More

The peers I'd previously thought to be relatively atonal surprised me time and again by bringing in guitars, basses, hand drums, even the occasional trumpet. Read More

Starting with a jazz quartet in 2003, I've led and put together many groups and musical encounters over the years. I always think about the time my guitar teacher in high school introduced me to the music of Steve Reich nonchalantly, and how that changed my personal music trajectory so profoundly. I like introducing kids to new concepts naturally, through things that they already enjoy, as a way to keep things fresh and open them up to the possibilities in music. Read More
