My main music philosophy is to teach sound before sight: teach students to hear the music, and then read the notation. For beginners, I want them to become well acquainted with their instrument so I begin with the basic fundamentals, and then teach some traditional tunes before moving on to reading music. For students who can already read music, I like to work on sight-reading as well as finding solo repertoire that can be performed at recitals. Read More

While I taught before graduate school, most of my teaching experience comes from the graduate assistant ship I held while studying. I taught undergraduate students with guitar as their primary instrument and also oversaw several classical guitar esembles. Outside of the assistantship I have taught a wide range of ages, from young children to middle-aged adults. Not all my students in the past want to learn to read music however I really push for it, cause its the most helpful tool for being a working musician! I like to start my beginning students out with the Mel Bay book #1 through #7. However thats those books focus on some theory, mostly just and intro to reading notes on the staff.
