To teach reading guitar tablature I use a guitar method book written by a local guitarist in Kansas City, David Smart. In the progression of teaching and learning, you should learn chord charts and standard notation for the reason mentioned above and at least be familiar with how to read tab so you can decipher it when you encounter it.
