For my beginning students I like to start with multiple methods such as simple tabs to teach string use, what I like to call as power chord theory with simple power chord knowledge. I do this because you don't have to worry about major, minor, augmented, or diminished when power chords. I can go ahead start basic theory lessons on this. I'm brand new to teaching guitar, so my methods are somewhat flexible with regards to student needs. I have experience both with written music and tabs, so student preference will determine which route to take. I've always found lessons to be more effective when instructors utilized the song method; to me, introducing elements of theory through this method makes the information "stickier." With a teacher-mom, I believe my teaching experience started as soon as I could wrangle the attention of my little sister or stuffed animals. Officially I did some tutoring and a pre-teacher program in high school, along with some volunteering at after school programs. I also tutored and taught private lessons while in college.
