My teaching experience started when I was still in high school. I held private lessons when I was 18 and had 10 students who I regularly met with. Once I became more serious about pursuing music as a career, I went to college to obtain a degree. I started teaching guitar at about 16, and have always maintained a studio of at least a couple students. I also offered assistance in the local band classes in order to improve my chops on my alternate instruments. I've played with several local bands, played musicals for local and regional theater groups, and was the house band leader for the Williamsburg Dinner Theater for 4 years. By my best estimation, I have played well over 1000 shows (probably closer to 1200), and that number continues to grow as I develop my band, the Darrell Boger Band. Read More

For beginning students I always begin with a methods book, I believe that good fundamentals are what makes a good musician, but I also teach ear training methods thereby giving the student the best in both worlds. Once the fundamentals and foundation are efficient, then according to the instrument I move to solo repertoire or experimentation or interpretation. I am classically trained with a secondary in jazz guitar. I have exceptional technique and use it for all styles of music. This is how my students climb the ladder faster than others. I also have an exceptional ear, I haven't heard anything I cannot play, so when you bring me something I'll be able to process it right away and begin showing it to you. My lessons will be pretty focused on music theory so that, in time, the student will be able to make their own music with ease. For new beginners, I'd likely ask which song they wanted to learn. And then I'd teach it to them, while also explaining scales, how to build chords, and the theory used in the song. Because my favorite part of playing music is improvisation, that's my go-to goal for the student, but I'm always willing to adjust my teaching methods accordingly. Read More
