As the student progresses, I introduce techniques that appeal to his or her preferences and strengths as they appear. For adults and teens, I find out what the student's musical goals are, such as accompanying themselves or lead playing, and tailor my instruction and materials to keep the lessons engaging and effective. For elementary school-aged students and younger who are just starting out, I will typically see if the student is familiar with, and a fan of, any classic or contemporary pop or rock music. If so, then basic chords and rudimentary music theory is where I like to start.
