Growing up in Memphis, I began playing the piano at age 6. After moving to bass guitar a few years later, I finally picked up my brother's acoustic guitar and never looked back. At Vanderbilt University, I studied music and English and began gigging professionally in Nashville while still finishing my degree. I live for the "AHA!" moments from my students. There comes a point in every students musical journey where it all snaps together like a puzzle and a new piece of the picture can be seen. "AHA" moments are big deals, and we celebrate them together. Once a student has completed one skill, technique, scale, etc... we move ahead at his or her own pace. For beginners, I usually start with teaching you basic technique on the instrument. For example, how to hold the instrument, notes on the fretboard, how to count and play at the same time, etc. Once the student progresses, I begin to teach you more intermediate techniques, music theory, ear training, and learning songs. I began singing solos in church when I was 6 years old. I picked up the guitar when I was 10. At Montevallo, my primary instrument was voice and piano was my secondary instrument. I've been teaching professionally since 1981 -- 37 years as of this writing. My students have gone on to be professionals themseleves, but many of them just enriched their lives with music. As a performer, I've sung and played guitar in churches, clubs, local television and at weddings, funerals and I've perfomed in musicals alongside Broadway star Rebecca Luker in college. Read More
