My teaching style focuses on encouraging students to be self-driven in exploring the guitar and their own unique style, be that from finding inspiration in artists from their chosen genre or through reaching milestones. I emphasize the importance of enjoying the act of playing guitar and separately setting aside time to engage in focused learning to avoid passion fatigue. My philosophy is that everyone is musical to some degree and that anyone can be taught to play music. Not everyone can be taught the same way, however, and it takes a highly skilled, creative, intuitive and patient teacher to do that. I customize my teaching to the student.  I use several different method books depending on the age, ability and learning style of the student. I have been teaching the guitar for over 25 years. I currently have about 20 online students. I've recently moved to Tennessee from Connecticut so I am looking to add in person students as well. I've also been a working performer for over 25 years playing in various bands from tributes to The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, and Pink Floyd. Also, a country/classic rock acoustic duo. I began teaching guitar while in high school, and have had students consistently since 2002. During college I taught private guitar lessons both in Grand Rapids and Ypsilanti Michigan. After graduating I begam teaching guitar, audio engineering, and music business at Grand Rapids Community College. From 2009-2016 I was an instructor for a teen music program myself and other members of The Outer Vibe started called "Rock Camp." I usually start beginning students who are children with Mel Bay's Guitar Method Grade 1. As the student progresses, I introduce techniques that appeal to his or her preferences and strengths as they appear. For adults and teens, I find out what the student's musical goals are, such as accompanying themselves or lead playing, and tailor my instruction and materials to keep the lessons engaging and effective.
