Instruments: Guitar, Bass Guitar, Mandolin, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar

I think that when teaching an instrument it is very important to get the student off the ground and playing with others as quickly as possible. I am a strong believer in teaching a few chords and one scale and letting the student begin playing with bands and making their own music. I think that music is a personal thing that shouldn't be too strict or rigid from the start. Read More

Instruments: Guitar, Ukulele, Mandolin

I usually start beginning students who are children with Mel Bay's Guitar Method Grade 1. As the student progresses, I introduce techniques that appeal to his or her preferences and strengths as they appear. For adults and teens, I find out what the student's musical goals are, such as accompanying themselves or lead playing, and tailor my instruction and materials to keep the lessons engaging and effective. I frequently create custom lesson plans, drills, and materials as well. Read More

Instruments: Guitar, Music, Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar, Acoustic Guitar

I like to get my students to a level at which they can actually make/play music first, using their current favorite genre of music. The sooner they can make sounds on the instrument that resemble something close to "music," the sooner they'll fall in love with the instrument. Once they have reached that level, we then dive in to music theory, guitar specific theory, sight-reading, and all of the other necessary areas of music that tend to deter most potential students. Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Voice, Keyboard, Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar, Acoustic Guitar

For beginner guitar students I use Mel Bays You Can Teach Yourself guitar . I emphasize chords and technique and playing melodies. For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning. I believe in making lessons fun and enjoyable but at the same time emphasize the importance of daily practice. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Violin, Cello, Viola, Drums, Bass Guitar, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar

My method of teaching involves researching a wide range of resources in order to find what is best for the student at the current stage in his or her development.  Using my own knowledge, I am able to effectively adapt and improve these resources so as to be accessible to the student.  For bass students, I might use Hal Leonard's Bass Method, book one.  For young beginning guitar students, I recommend The Beginning Guitarist's Book by Tom Hess.
