Music has been a significant part of my life since I was a child, and it's importance has grown as I've gotten older. I started, as many do, in the fifth grade when I started playing the saxophone which I continued on through high school. When I was 13 I started playing the electric guitar, and I would later switch to the classical guitar at 19. I believe patience coupled with encouragement can be a recipe for success. When the student develops their own passion for music and their instrument their abilities tend to soar. I attempt to set realistic goals for the student but I am very adaptable and flexible. I still remember being able to strum my first song on the guitar. After that I was hooked! I believe in understanding the fundamentals and learning the technical aspects are important, however I have seen firsthand how enjoying music and the instrument and being able to play a song and not just a scale can lead to an increased desire to play and learn more. I began teaching private guitar lessons while I was attending Ohio State University. I was a teaching assistant while in graduate school. During my school days I thought of teaching music simply as a way to earn some money. After completing my college work I became a touring freelance musician, performing with widely-varying artists and an extremely wide range of style and genres. I noticed that, because of the excellent understanding of music I was given, I could easily go from one genre to another effortlessly, while most of the musicians with whom i played seemed to stay within one particular style or feel.
