Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. I began teaching my freshman year of college and supported my family while going to school. My musical journey began when I was 17 years old. I approach teaching with an empty canvas. As i ask questions and listen to responses, we begin to paint that canvas until we have the same metaphorical picture. Once this is established we can build more and more from that initial canvas. I take my time to guide my students into a hands on approach to learning. Generally for beginner students I will start by going over the basics, a small amount of essential music theory, how to read tabs and chord diagrams, and the different components and notes on a guitar or bass, before moving onto the fun part Ive found students tend to want to practice and play more when they are learning songs they love the most. When I was growing up, one of my favorite memories is listening to my grandfather play bluegrass on his guitar and banjo. He gave me my first guitar at age 12 and started to show me chords and patterns to play. But it was when I first heard led Zepplin's black dog opening riff that I knew I wanted to rock. I believe that the best way to learn how to play is to play what you like to listen to. Practicing the repertoire is as important as the mechanical and technical practices of the instrument. Based on this, I often try to identify the techniques used in the songs that the student likes and whenever possible, we work on the technical part applied to a given song.
