I feel that it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals and assignments for my students at each lesson. This measurable progression of accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Of course finding out the students problem areas is also paramount to helping them progress at the fastest rate possible. For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital. I prefer to focus on the joy of making music and the satisfaction of learning through accomplishment! In order to achieve this, I will try my best to keep lessons upbeat (pun intended), fast paced, and fun! Especially for younger students, I will use games and interactive activities to keep the student engaged, although I do believe games are good for the soul at all ages.
