I will present different methods and goals to each student and each lesson depending on their level, availability, and goals. If a student is a young beginner, the most important thing is simply to grow their love of music. For an intermediate adult, I will present new challenges to eliminate weaknesses and grow strengths that also still encourage fun. If a student is taking lessons to become a college or professional pianist, I will introduce repertoire, music theory, music history, and techniques that will be crucial information and skills to advance in the competitive world of piano. I have found that a combination of a formal structure, such as a book series, and ad hoc discussions of areas of interest have proved most successful for teaching music. I have used the Bastien Piano Basics series, as well as devised personalized lesson plans for students. For voice, The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology series is forever at my side. My approach to teaching theory is devised from the current background and goals of the students, and I often use the "Techniques and Materials of Music" textbook by Thomas Benjamin, Michael Horvit, and Robert Nelson as a resource.
